THE DC MURAL INITIATIVE
Illegal tagging and graffiti has had a boom throughout Washington DC in the last year. The DC city council has recognized that court ordered punishment is not the answer to the problem seeing as most offenders are teens who are simply in need of a positive outlet to learn and practice an art style that is hugely popular world wide.
Councilman Jim Graham (Ward 1) has enlisted The Midnight Forum to develop a program that would help DC youth programs produce legal graffiti murals throughout the District. Thanks to a partnership between The Midnight Forum, Councilman Graham’s office, Columbia Heights/Shaw Family Support Collaborative and Bell Multicultural High School a pilot program was successfully completed this past July and August. Two new murals were produced by DC teens that both erased illegal tags and beautified two business’s within Ward 1. This is only the beginning.
This fall we are happy to announce the expansion of the Mural Initiative into Wards 7 & 8 with more locations to be announced in Spring 2008.
If you are an individual, or part of a youth program that would like to take part in this ground breaking program, please call or e-mail The Midnight Forum to receive more information.
